Born in Buenos Aires, Elizabeth Aro lived in Madrid from 1990 to 2005 and currently resides in Milan. She studied at the University of Fine Arts Prilidiano Pueyrredón in Buenos Aires before moving to Madrid. In 1991, she was the youngest artist featured in the innovative exhibition "La Escuela del Sur, el taller de Torres García y su legado" at the Museo Reina Sofía, and in 2004, she became the first Argentine woman to hold a solo exhibition at this museum.
Throughout her career, Aro has explored numerous themes, with a central focus on women. She consistently investigates daily realities through recurring subjects that become specific research pathways: the female condition, memory, travel, migration, nature's vulnerability, and identity search are prevalent in her work. These complex topics have been subtly analyzed and interpreted over the years using extensive metaphors and visual research. Her use of sewing as an expressive medium signifies a reclamation of labor traditionally associated with women. Aro enhances and illuminates this medium with particular elegance.
In 2021, she collaborated with Babs to create the pendant "La Rosa Herida" for the Francesca Rava Foundation, which supports women suffering from domestic violence. With an ability to capture the spirit of the times, Aro employs diverse expressive codes: drawing, sculpture, photography, textile art, engraving, and painting become versatile tools in her hands, each interpreting her thoughts according to context and historical moment.
